Celestia Revolutionizes Blockchain with 1 GB Blocks
Celestia, a leading player in the blockchain space, recently announced its ambitious roadmap to scale blockchain data throughput to 1 GB blocks. This move aims to significantly enhance the performance and scalability of decentralized applications, marking a major milestone in the blockchain industry.
The Journey to 1 Gigabyte Blocks
After successfully launching the Mainnet Beta last year, Celestia has seen rapid growth in its ecosystem. Developers have already deployed the first 20 rollups, with Celestia blobs accounting for 40% of the total data published, as reported by the Celestia Blog.
The key focus of Celestia’s roadmap is to achieve 1 gigabyte blocks, a groundbreaking development that will revolutionize data throughput for Celestia’s rollup ecosystem. Unlike traditional blockchains that rely on a monolithic L1, Celestia has the flexibility to build high-throughput applications using any virtual machine, enabling developers to scale existing ecosystems like Ethereum or create their own networks.
Through various technical innovations such as content-addressable mempool, compact blocks, CometBFT block propagation optimization, internal node sharding, and improved data availability sampling protocol, Celestia aims to deliver the capacity of multiple Visa networks simultaneously. This will unlock new possibilities for on-chain applications like verifiable web apps and fully on-chain gaming.
Accessible Verification for Everyone
Celestia’s commitment to making its blockspace accessible and verifiable by anyone, on any device, is a major focus area for the community. The development of light nodes that can run in web browsers will enable users to verify applications deployed in Celestia blockspace easily. An early version of the light node in the browser has already been created by Eiger at Lumina.rs.
Overview of the Roadmap
The roadmap is divided into three core workstreams:
- Abundant Blockspace: Achieving 1GB blocks to support a wide range of rollups, including high-throughput use cases such as Visa-scale payment networks and fully on-chain games.
- Verifiable Blockspace: Ensuring that blockspace is easily verifiable by anyone, anywhere, on any device.
- Frictionless Blockspace: Removing barriers for rollup developers and end-users by enhancing interoperability and scalability.
