A Remark from an Acquainted Politician

Navigating the Political Moat: Understanding the Hidden Barriers in Governance

Three Way Hand Shake

When I first took on the role of commissioner, one phrase kept surfacing in discussions: “staff recommends.” At first, I thought it was just an innocuous phrase, but over time, it became painfully apparent that it often reflects a self-serving agenda rather than genuine concern for the community. It’s a convenient way for those in power to sidestep hard decisions while maintaining the illusion of transparency and due diligence.

Cutting Through the Nonsense

It became my mission to challenge this status quo. Throughout my tenure on various boards and committees at both county and state levels, I couldn’t help but notice a troubling pattern: many of these committees serve as a façade, with members often too complacent to engage in the essential work that their roles demand. Staff recommendations often come laden with biases and hesitations, giving rise to the question: why even hold meetings if the tail is truly wagging the dog?

Castle Moat

The Political Moat: A Modern Trap

This scenario is akin to a medieval castle surrounded by a moat, a metaphor for today’s political landscape. In those times, a moat kept intruders at bay, but it also served a less glamorous purpose: it was often a refuse pit, accumulating waste from the castle. Gaining access to the king required bravery, as one had to navigate the foul waters of dysfunction.

Fast forward to the present day, and we find ourselves battling modern equivalents of that moat. The so-called DEEP STATE operates much like those medieval barriers—an impenetrable network of gatekeepers who dictate narratives and choke off alternative voices. Whether it’s political heavyweights like Trump or independent thinkers like RFK Jr., they face an uphill battle against this entrenched establishment.

Understanding the ‘DEEP STATE’

The DEEP STATE in today’s context represents not just politicians but a web of bureaucrats, lobbyists, and interconnected interests that manipulate the system for their own advantages. Attempts to disrupt this system are met with a coordinated pushback. Each reform proposal, dissident voice, or fresh idea gets mired in a thick fog of resistance that is often self-interested, leading to a cycle that perpetuates complacency and inaction.

  3. Demand Transparency: Advocate for clear communication and transparency from your elected officials. If recommendations are made, ask for data and reasoning. If the answer is unsatisfactory, press for a better explanation.
