Ethereum Developers Discuss Key Updates in Execution Call #199

Stay ahead of the curve with the latest updates from the Ethereum community. On October 24, 2024, Ethereum developers gathered for the All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) Call #199, led by Tim Beiko, Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol Support Lead. This meeting delved into crucial updates surrounding Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), Pectra Devnet advancements, and debates on block gas limits.

The Future of Pectra Devnet

One of the significant highlights of the meeting was the confirmation of EIP 7742’s inclusion in the upcoming Pectra upgrade. The discussion also revolved around a proposal to double the block gas limit incrementally over two years post-upgrade, eliminating the need for a hard fork. Developers recently launched Pectra Devnet 4, identifying areas for improvement with clients like Erigon and EthereumJS. Pectra Devnet 5 preparations are underway, focusing on changes to gas costs for EIP 2537 and updates to EIP 7685 and EIP 7702.

The Block Gas Limit Debate

Debates ensued regarding the proposal to gradually double the block gas limit over the next two years. While some developers, including Nethermind’s Ben Adams, expressed support for EIP 7790, others emphasized the need for further research and testing. Concerns were raised about implementing related EIPs, such as EIP 4444 and EIP 7623, before increasing the block gas capacity.

Innovations and Scheduling

Felix Lange introduced the idea of adding official revert error codes for contract calls to the Execution API, promoting standardization across various clients. Additionally, the call addressed the November ACD call schedule, confirming the call on November 21 while canceling testing calls on November 11 and 18.
