Waymo, known for its cutting-edge autonomous technology, will be integrating its Waymo Driver into a significant volume of Ioniq 5 vehicles over the next few years. This collaboration aims to support Waymo’s expanding robotaxi business, backed by Alphabet, the parent company of Google.
This partnership comes on the heels of Waymo’s recent announcement about its sixth-generation self-driving technology, set to be integrated into Geely Zeekr electric vehicles. The innovative technology is designed to operate in a variety of weather conditions without the need for excessive cameras and sensors.
With Waymo currently operating the only commercial robotaxi service in the U.S., Waymo One, the addition of the Ioniq 5 EVs to its fleet is a significant development. These vehicles will be produced at Hyundai’s upcoming Metaplant America facility in Georgia and then equipped with Waymo’s autonomous technologies.
Initial on-road testing of Waymo-enabled Ioniq 5s is scheduled to begin by late 2025, with plans to make them available to Waymo One riders in the following years. While the financial terms of the partnership remain undisclosed, Waymo will purchase and own the vehicles.
This collaboration marks just the beginning of what could be a long-term partnership between Hyundai and Waymo. José Muñoz, Hyundai’s Chief Operating Officer, expressed enthusiasm for the potential growth of this alliance, indicating that additional collaboration opportunities are being explored.
We are thrilled to see the Ioniq 5 being utilized in such innovative ways, as it is also currently being used by Motional, an autonomous vehicle startup jointly owned by Hyundai and Aptiv. Rest assured, the Waymo partnership will not impact Motional’s operations.
